“We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.”
Hebrews 12:2 NLT
Let’s unpack the above verse together because I believe it is filled with nuggets of joy and power throughout it….
Let us begin with the beginning of the verse: “we do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus.” Strength is gained by looking unto Jesus. I have recently started to use my mouth more to speak authority with it. (Proverbs 18:22) Do you know the words uttered of an ordained minister at the end of a wedding ceremony? Well likewise, we too have “the power invested in us.”
Next, let’s move on to “the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” He is telling us Jesus won the championship via the crucifixion and He also both initiates (Philippians 1:6) and perfects our faith. In full disclosure, initially the term “perfect” intimidated me until it was revealed to me that “perfect” is another term for “mature” in God’s eyes. Having this revelation knowledge made known to me took away a GREAT deal of pressure and His peace began flooding my soul.
Finally, let’s examine these two sentences…” Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.” In my opinion, these sentences are the very definition of the walk and talks. We look at the problem but we focus in on the solution.
I recently had The Holy Spirit bring this verse to the forefront of my mind. I’ll briefly share my story:
My mom’s annual Thanksgiving dinner was preceded by an ice storm the night before . I contemplated going due to the unseen black ice (I was dependent on public transportation to get to her nursing home facility). However, I thought about my mom’s pleasant surprise and her smile at my arrival and so I went anyway.
God does reward our faithfulness and belief in His Word, so we definitely should not give up- EVER! (Galatians 6:9)
That said, let’s all follow the Apostle Paul’s example in Philippians 3:14 regarding pressing forward.
